Growing Together with Opportunities, Guidance, and Making a Difference – Insights from Nick Merkord, Graduate Engineer

September 16, 2025

This Q&A series highlights the people behind the projects, sharing their career paths, insights, and the values that shape their work. Set within Steger Bizzell’s collaborative, purpose-driven environment, it offers perspectives on work-life balance, professional growth, and a shared commitment to making a meaningful impact.

In this edition, we spoke with Nick Merkord, Graduate Engineer, who shares his perspective on choosing Steger Bizzell to grow his career, the goals he is working toward, and the values that guide his growth as an engineer.

What inspired you to join Steger Bizzell, what has been most meaningful since, and how does this connect with your future goals?

The camaraderie really stood out. Any job can provide a paycheck, but enjoying the people you work with makes a huge difference. At my previous large company, it was easy to feel like just a number. Here, everyone knows each other, we have company events, and many of us spend time together outside of work. That sense of connection and culture made the choice clear.

I aim to further develop my expertise in concrete construction and design. I want to expand my project experience across different aspects of civil and structural design while continuing to pursue certifications through ACI and other organizations that strengthen my technical foundation. I hope to continue learning, take on more responsibility, and remain challenged. I am confident Steger Bizzell provides the right environment to make that happen.

How has Steger Bizzell’s culture of mentorship, in-office learning, and professional development shaped your growth and aligned with your career interests?

Steger Bizzell offers a great foundation for career growth. I have appreciated the formal mentorship provided when you start—having someone guide you through the ropes, share insights, and ease the transition. For me, in-office learning has been invaluable. Being able to ask questions face-to-face and learn directly from colleagues has accelerated my understanding.

In what ways have your role at Steger Bizzell and the company’s support programs helped you grow and align with your career values? What do you aim to achieve in your role?

I am in a unique position where I float between the utilities department and the land development department, while also doing a lot of concrete design. It keeps me challenged, gives me variety, and aligns well with my interests.

I especially value the educational assistance program, which supports employees pursuing further learning and credentials. That is something I plan to take advantage of. Many of my colleagues have used Steger Bizzell’s support to prepare for the FE or the PE exams.

I want to prioritize integrity, a strong work ethic, and respect for both clients and colleagues. Those are qualities that make a lasting difference over time.
